My father was a radio operator on the Chilliwack (and then the HMSC Assiniboine later in the war) on March 5, 1944. My father kept all his letters to and from his parents for the entire war years from 1939 to 1947. As a family project, I’ve been sorting the letters chronologically for the last several years. Just out of interest I thought I would mention he kept certain navel messages for key events for some reason and I have the originals. By way of example, I have many Naval Messages from the first notice from the Admiralty to the Convoy HX 280 that they thought a U boat was in the area as well as many messages from the following days, back and forth to the admiralty including dates times who was involved etc. Quite interesting actually.
Cheers

My father (Lewis Macgregor) was a chief petty officer on the Chilliwack. He was present when they sunk the U744.I recently came into possession of his at sea diary and I also have some photos ( good battle pics). Sadly he passed in 2003 and i will forever cherish the stories he regaled me with of the life onboard ship from the time i was little until he passed.
The Canadian War Museum in Ottawa would be grateful to have your diary and letters. Maybe you could digitize them for them and keep the originals to pass on.
Thinking of my father who was on the Chilliwack during the war today as many of us are. He spoke rarely about his service but had a picture of the men he fought with. I did have a conversation with a man from the east who was also on the ship. He has since past away. My dad past away in 1991. His name is Edward Arthur Meade. Always looking to see his name on the list of men on the ship but so far no. Glad to read from others who had a connection he was a gunner
Our Uncle Murray Stewart Edmand served as regular Seaman aboard the HMCS Fennel. Part of the convoy that harassed and forced U744 to surrender. He was raised in Winnipeg MB and was a rescue swimmer. He finished out his years in Winnipeg Beach.
